Huie Library Henderson State University - Arkadelphia, Arkansas
The expansion of Huie library added at Henderson State University provides 21,000 sq. ft. to meet the needs of a rapidly expanding student body.
The panning process explored several schemes to add space to the building. Each scheme revealed shortcomings in the technical services areas. These departments were under sized and the additional stack space was unavailable. In addition, the electrical service was inadequate for current computer requirements. Efforts to expand the existing building fragmented efforts to logically expand departments.
The design solution utilized the positive aspects of the existing building such as the main entry and the circulation core. Services that required minimum demand for mechanical and electrical flexibility were located in the existing building. Departments that required high level power requirements and that would need flexibility for future changes were zoned to the new areas of construction. All new construction and remodel had to be accomplished while the library continued to serve the campus.
